My Fountain Of Youth

A good friend of mine turns fifty one this Friday and thinks he is an old man. I tried to tell him that fifty one is to me barely middle aged and that I am shooting for one hundred and five and that if I still feel good at one hundred five I might opt for extra innings. I celebrated the sixty sixth anniversary of this particular adventure in space and time last November. I believe there is but one number that defines us and that is the number One. Don’t get hung up on your age. It is all relative according to Einstein. I love the quote, “It is not the number of moments or breaths that make a life but the moments that take your breath away.” I might not have quoted that exactly right but I hope you know what I mean.

I have this very strong hunch that this is not my first rodeo or adventure in time. I think that we perhaps keep living and reliving certain things until we get them right and I intend to get some things right this time and move on to bigger deals ahead as Monty Hall used to say. Maybe I’m giving away my age with remarks like that but then I already did, sixty six and counting. Not as young as I once was but not nearly as old as I hope to be.

Another friend suggested that I write a blog about my fountain of youth. The secret if there is any to looking, feeling, and acting young is to think young. Some signs of old thinking are:

Talking about the “good old days” – these are the good young days.
Complaining about aches and pains – they come and go, let them.
Frowning into the mirror – smile gorgeous.

I am sixty six years young and getting younger everyday. Thinking you have seen everything  done everything, and figured it all out is a sure fire way to start feeling, old, tired, and ready to die. We need a reason to live, something to get us out of bed every morning, a dream that makes us smile and want to stick around awhile to see it comes true. Life is fun and new to the young at heart and the secret to staying young at heart is looking for all the little things to be grateful for in each new day. When Jesus said that to enter into the kingdom of heaven you must become as a little child I think that is what he meant. The young at heart rejoice in all the little miracles of life all around us.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
