My Funny Valentine
Frank Sinatra’s version of the song by that title sold a lot of copies in its day and is still listened to today. It is on my personal playlist as is “Alison” sung by Elvis Costello. In that song Elvis sings. “I’m not gonna get too sentimental like those other sticky valentines ’cause I don’t know if you’re loving somebody. I only know it isn’t mine.” Both valentine songs are great love songs. A sense of humor is a very loving and sexy thing. One of my dear friends who has had more than her share of sadness and hard times in her life remarked to me many years ago, “It is better to laugh than a cry.” A good cry can be a good thing too. Like most men I do most of my crying in the dark at sad movies. I highly recommend “A Dog’s Purpose” still in theatres at this writing. I have always been a sucker for a good dog story like Old Yeller or Biscuit Eater, Lassie or Rin Tin Tin.
But back to funny valentines, sometimes the mushy ones are pretty funny without trying to be. And man those tasty little hard candy ones with just a word or two go right to my heart. It is said the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I have always thought it was a little lower but I will try to keep this PG. I am not a very PG guy nor a GQ guy either for that matter and I really don’t care much for acronyms but I love funny valentines. I don’t really send out many cards of any kind anymore. I usually prefer to just write a few words of my own to friends and loved ones to remind them that I think they hung the moon and did a pretty fine job of it. I saw a cool saying in that same vein on Social Media today. It read, “I am not addicted to coffee but coffee and I have a very close relationship.” It reminded me of the line, “I do not worship you, I am just quite fond of the ground you walk upon.” That is the way that I feel about everyone I love.
It was and maybe still is a Valentine’s Day tradition to bring a valentine to everyone in your class in grade school. That is a good tradition only maybe we should not have stopped at grade school or ever. I know my heart still skips a beat when I get a valentine from someone. This is my funny valentine to you, Dear Heart, dear reader. It is perhaps a little early but I wanted you to know that I have loved you for as long as I can remember and probably a lot longer that that.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
