Are You Lonesome?

Blog 444 – 10.24.2016

A rock anthem from my youth said, “One is the loneliest number.” Most everyone has felt isolated at one time or another in life. Alone time, quiet time is probably one of the least appreciated gifts the Universe gives us right up there with winter, rain, and Mondays. People for the most part are just not that comfortable being on their own and without some kind of noise to distract them.

I love music and movies but sometimes we need to turn it all off and have some quiet time, some alone time, so we can hear ourselves think. But, if we are afraid to be alone, or are afraid of what we might be thinking, we don’t know really know who we are. Jesus asked the boys once, “Who do men say that I am?” They answered some say this one, some say that one. He went on to say, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter spoke up, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” At the risk of offending many of my Christian friends I think we have mistaken the real meaning of that exchange. Christ is a word that means “annointed.” Kings were annointed with oil and others to signify a certain calling or purpose. Sick people were annointed with oil to signify healing. We are all, each and everyone of us choice or chosen, annointed. We are all, each and every one if us, children of the Universe, the living God. The Universe has no picks, no favorites, and Jesus mission was not to save us from our sins so much as to save us from our identity crisis. We had and have forgotten Who and Whose we are.

That’s why we feel so lonesome. We feel isolated and alone, down and out, like failures, like the Prodigal Son sleeping with the pigs and so hungry we are even contemplating eating their slop. But remember it says, “He came to himself.” he remembered Who and Whose he was, that he was loved, and that he had never for a moment really been alone.

Like Dorothy in Oz it all seemed like a bad dream.Life for many of us at one time or another has become like a lonely, scary nightmare. At times like that we need to wake up and remember Who and Whose we are. You are the chosen child of the living God, all that is living, the Universe. The Universe is One, and contrary to that rock anthem One is not the loneliest number, One is the complete number. And you never have to feel alone, or afraid, or guilty anymore. Just remember Who and Whose you truly are.
