Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have coined the phrase, “Today is a gift that is why they call it the present.” When we reject this gift it clogs the flow of the gifts coming to us and skews our vision regarding them.
For those who think the Bible a more reliable source than an ex-President’s wife here is a quote for you:
Every good and perfect gift
comes down from the father
of lights with whom is no
variableness neither shadow
of turning.
Two things I see in that sentence. First, that God, or the Universe as some call the great all there is, gives good and perfect gifts. Secondly, that the Universe is changeless.
We have been too often misled by those who pretend to be go betweens between us and our higher source as if we needed such a thing. Why would anyone presume such a role but for money or control or both. It is as if someone came to you and said, “I know you and your dad are not getting along let me talk to him for you.” Or someone said to you, “You don’t know what you want or what is wrong with you. Talk to me and for a fee and some control over you life I will tell you. Trust me, I am a professional.” Hey, wait a minute, Dave, are you saying we don’t need professional help? Well, maybe you do. But I think only a truly crazy person would seek professional help without first checking to see if they had the knowledge, the tools, and the ability to handle it themselves.
A wise older man gave me some great advice when I was a young man. He said, if you want to have money stay away from doctors and lawyers. I have added to his wise words and offer an expanded version of his sage advice:
If you want to be healthy, wealthy, and
happy stay away from doctors,
lawyers, preachers, and politicians.
What I’m trying to say is don’t look outside of yourself for the answers. We are like the newer computers and smart phones with a built in help site. In addition to which we receive daily gifts like updates from the Universe, presents in the present. These are our experiences and there are only two true reactions to these gifts. We can win some or learn some. Oh, we can try to reject them or leave them unopened but they are still ours and waiting for us to gratefully receive them.
Sometimes it is hard to see the gift in our experiences like the other day when at work my cell phone fell out of my pocket at into a deep hole full of muddy water. But I tried hard to see the gift immediately. My first thought was now I can buy that new phone with a bigger screen. There are pluses and minuses in every situation I choose to be positive and grateful. The law of attraction is that like attracts like. If you want to attract those gifts you want. Be that gift. Want to be happy, act happy. There is great truth in the saying, “Fake it till you make it.”
What do you think, is thinking about what we want not what we don’t want really the secret to health, wealth, and happiness? Let me know if you know of a better way. And if you are a doctor, lawyer, preacher or politician we can just agree to disagree. Just try not to gouge the rubes too much and enjoy the gift of this free advice. Maybe like the comic strip Peanuts’s Lucy I should hang up a shingle, “The Doctor Is In – 5 Cents.”
If you don’t like the “free advice” that’s alright. It was with the best of intentions meant and it didn’t cost a cent. The ole saying goes, “A bargain at half the price.” I like the song lyric, “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing but you gotta have something if you wanna be with me.” You do have something, all of us do, we have today. Don’t forget to open your present.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
