We have all heard the expression, “It is the thought that counts.” But I really think that means a great deal more than the most common usage – when we or someone else thinks we might have given a more thoughtful or appropriate gift. There is real power in a thought. Power to transform your life. The poet has written, “Steel bars and gray walls do not a prison make.” A thought can make a prison out of a palace. My mother who suffered from chronic depression took her own life the summer before her 69th birthday and my 50th. My Mother lived in a prison of her own making, in her own mind. Her thoughts were dark and as she was determined to never be put in a retirement home she ended her own life.
I intend to die in a trot. But, if the Universe Who knows better than I do what is best for me, allows me to spend my last act in a retirement home, by God, I plan to make the most of it. I’ll be singing daily in the lounge and entertaining the folks. I have learned how to shine and I am gonna shine where ever they put me. I think Jesus testimony about his cousin John (The Baptist) is about the best testimony that could be said of anyone, “We rejoiced in his light.”
We are each of us “light beings” and have more than enough light within us to brighten or own pathway and that of others too if we let it shine. I learned a song as many of you did as a child, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine… Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
There is an old saying that it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. An old joke says, “I was so bright as a lad that my mother called, me Sunny.” My mother did actually call me, “Sunshine.” From a boy I tried hard to shine for her but I was not enough she needed somehow to tap in to that “inner light” that Universal light that shines in each one of us. What turns it on is a thought. Jesus expressed it like this, “I am the light of the world.” And less we miss his meaning he said it more clearly elsewhere, “You are the light of the world.” Shine on, you children of light.
