I Hope You Dance

Blog 183 – 12.14.15

If you wonder where the ideas for my blogs come from, actually most often the title come first and I write the piece around those few words. “I Hope You Dance” is from a beautiful country song. As I have mentioned I grew up in Christian fundamentalist tradition where smoking, drinking, dancing, and going to the movies were all deemed equally wrong. Watching TV also unless it was the News, which is to me the worst thing anyone could watch. Oh, perhaps some PBS was deemed acceptable like Mr. Rogers or Sesame Street for the wee ones. I was a child in Captain Kangaroo days and the Captain always told the kids to remember to say their prayers.

But I will try to limit my remarks to dancing. There is a scene in the Old Testament where King David got so happy in the spirit that he danced naked before the LORD. David’s wife who saw him criticized him for it and he told her he was not dancing for her and that she should mind her own business. People are always trying to tell others how to worship, how to live, and how to think, and yes how and when to dance or telling them that they should not dance at all.

The young lady in the country song just says, “If you get the chance to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance.” I learned today that a dear friend just had a second hip replacement. He thinks the doctors are trying to make him into a cyborg. He hopes to be pain free, to be able to walk, run, and even dance. In a comment to him I wrote: “We can rebuild him. We can make him better. We have the technology – The Six Million Dollar Man.” I hope you dance.

“Get on up and dance now.”

David White
