If I can I would like to show you two great lies told on God. Some people irrationally believe things because they read them in a book or because some beloved, parent, teacher or friend said these things were so. We believe a lot of things that are called ” old wives tales.” Politicians say things and others that can be fact checked and proven to be false.
The problem with beliefs is that we hold them so dearly and strongly that they become sacrosanct, meaning it is a point of religious belief that one is considered to have betrayed The Truth to even question. To that I say “Horse feathers” and feathers is a nicer word than the one I had in mind. But you get my meaning which is this – any belief that cannot stand to be challenged is weak and ought to be discarded on that criterion alone. Much of religious belief seems to educated minds to be but myths and fairy tales. A God, wise, loving, and powerful enough to in fact be all there is, the entire Universe would not expect you to “take on faith” the many foolish claims that are made in His name. What a crock of “horse feathers.” Yeah, I said it again.
One of the Seven so called Deadly Sins is Jealousy. But I hear people defending jealousy as if it were necessary to real love. “You mean you are not jealousy of any attention your loved one pays to someone else?” Why, no, should I be? It would be pretty darned selfish of me not to share such a treasure. Besides she has such a big heart there is room in there for a lot of folks.
Some people even foolishly wrote that God was a jealous God and would have no other gods before him. Balderdash, that is just another form of “horse feathers.” First of all there is only One God and He is everything so whom is he supposed to be jealous of exactly – a rock, a tree, a big set of ta tas. By the way I love those little stone fertility goddesses. And I am sure The Big Guy gets a kick out of them too as He invented, sex, motherhood, everything as a matter of fact. Love and worship anyone or anything you like. It is all Him. He has rigged the deck and cannot lose.
I cannot resist pointing out but one more bold faced lie about God. Namely that, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” Clearly in another place it is stated, “Perfect love casts out fear and he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” There is a real contradiction here. To be afraid when we are perfectly loved is the height of all irrational fears. All fears are irrational.
A dear and beloved friend recently shared a story about a little boy who was afraid of a huge giant. His daddy told him to face the giant and to walk toward it. As the little boy mustered the courage to face his giant and take those first shaky steps toward it he noticed that the closer he got to the giant the smaller the giant became. When he got right to it he found it a very little thing and he asked it’s name. The tiny creature replied, “My name is fear.”
In a fearful time in our country’s history called the Great Depression we had a fatherly President who reminded us all, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” A little wise person named Yoda warned a young Jedi Knight that fear leads to hate and hate to the Dark Side. Jealousy, fear, and darkness are all illusions. Love and light make them all disappear.
Your friend and fellow traveler, rejoicing in the light,
