I’d Like To Buy The World A Coke

Blog 165 – 11.18.15

There was a famous Coca Cola commercial in the nineteen seventies where the manufacturers of Coke sang about their product bringing peace on earth. Pretty lofty ambitions for a soft drink but I like the idea of people sitting around a table having coffee or a soft drink and coming together. I have never been much for alcoholic beverages which I blame on what I teasingly call my “mid-spent youth” in Christian Fundamentalism.

C.S. Lewis, the great Christian apologist and one of my favorite authors. Wrote that Christianity is not a “tee-total or alcohol-free” religion that if one is looking for that they need to look to Islam or Mormonism. In the wake of the terrible attacks in Paris by Islamic Fundamentalist Extremists perhaps I should modify my blog title and say instead I’d Like To Buy The World A Glass Of Wine.

The conclusions of horrific wars, divorces,  and terrible misunderstands is most always the same both sides sit around a table and tally the destruction and come to terms for peace and rebuilding. Why can’t we just skip the devastation and go straight to the table and a glass of wine, Coke, or coffee. Even heated arguments and shoes banging on the table is better than open hostilities. Compromise is not a dirty word. War is a dirty word and everyone loses when fear wins and wars result.

Relax have a drink and let’s see if we cannot find common ground and start a dialogue. Many homes used to have a sampler on the wall that read, “The family that prays together stays together.” Families that talk stay closer. If we just listen to one another beyond the sabers rattling and war drums beating we might just hear something that could open a door to a better understanding. “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”
