A Job Worth Doing

Blog 126 – 9.28.15

A job worth doing is worth doing well as the saying goes. The evidence of a good worker, and according to Proverbs they are so rare that the are worthy of the company of kings,
is attention to the details. Another ole saying is, “Little things mean a lot.” While I am here I would like to quote a poem that illustrates the importance of details.

For lack of a nail
The shoe was lost
For lack of a shoe
The horse was lost
For lack of a horse
The rider was lost
For lack of a rider
The message was lost
For lack of a message
The battle was lost
For lack of a battle
The war was lost.

Little things truly mean a lot. I had a lady friend when I was a young man, a couple of years ago. Time seems to pass faster the more time passes. Two weeks ago or almost forty five years ago a lovely and loving lady told me you won’t have to tell me when you have lost interest in me for you will just stop doing the little things. And she wasn’t talking about the classic complaint, “You don’t bring me flowers anymore.” Guys who don’t normally give flowers are wary of doing so because they don’t want the girl to think they are guilty of misbehaving. If you get lots of flowers from your guy you have my condolences. The florists and some guys are going to hate me for that one. There are a thousand little ways to say you are important to me. Like reaching over and turning off the TV or radio and saying, “I want to give you my undivided attention.” Multi-tasking is in my opinion just an excuse for doing a lot of things faster and usually with less attention to detail. Multi-taskers too often end up being members of that Semi-holed Indian tribe I mentioned in a previous blog. You know the ones those Half-assed Indians famous for shoddy work.

I met a man recently truly worthy of the company of kings. He was showing me a restored classic Mustang that he and his teenaged son had completely restored together. He taught his son throughout the long project that “a job worth doing is worth doing well” and it is evident they gave great attention to the details. See for yourself. I am posting a picture of a job done well by two workers worthy of the company of kings. And any man would feel himself a king to get to take a spin in this great ride.

Your friend and fellow traveler, hoping I get to take a ride in a beautiful red Mustang someday,
David White
