I recently was recommended a nice little place in Romney, Indiana to stop for breakfast on my drive up from Crawfordsville each morning to Lafayette where I am observing a construction crew. The first morning I stopped in there were several older guys sitting at a couple of tables pushed together. I asked them if I could sit with them and they said fine. I learned their names and joined their breakfast club. I have collected several hats in my travels and try to wear a different hat to breakfast each morning. The fellows find this quite entertaining.
I have worn a lot of hats in my life. I told you I tried to be a soldier once. Soldiers wear lots of hats. I was in the Army over forty years ago back when they still wore what they called the steel pot type helmets that they wore in WWII. I think they called them that because you could remove the helmet liner and actually use the outer steel shell as a pot for cooking or washing.
Having worn lots of hats is also an expression for having lots of jobs or playing lots of roles. Frank Sinatra, one of my favorite singers, once sang:
I’ve been a puppet, a pauper. a pirate,
A pawn and a king.
I’ve been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing.
Each time I find myself
Flat on my face
I pick myself up
And get back in the race.
Wise words and most of us have played those roles and many more. What role are you playing today? What is the favorite role you ever played? I’d love to hear about it. Three of my most favorite roles are: Friend, Brother, and Fellow Traveler.
What was your all time favorite job? Let me know.
Your Fellow Traveler,
David White
Child of God, Wife and Mother. Others would be: daughter, sister and friend.
