Today

The saying goes, “They that forget the past are doomed to repeat it.” Yet, I have found it to be far more true that those who dwell on the past especially its darker days are far more likely to relive its doom and gloom. Another day that causes us a problem is dwelling on the possibly misfortunes and misery that tomorrow may bring. There is only one day worth saving and living to the its fullest and that is today.

The poet has said, “Gather ye rosebuds will ye may.” To which I add, Amen, Live for today. If you must let your mind wander to yesterday or tomorrow may it be only briefly to remember the highest and the best or to foresee them in that day that never seems to come.

Today is yesterday’s dream come true and tomorrow the birthday of the dreams that we dream today. We cannot change the past. We can perhaps change the future but only for the better by choosing the best thoughts and dreams to dwell upon today. Today is the day of salvation not because religion says so but because thoughts do indeed become things and we can choose the good ones right now.

Happy Fifth of July!

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White

Author’s note: As a young man I spent much of my youth grieving over a lost love or imagining a love that could never be. My favorite song during those misspent years was the lovely, but quite sad romantic ballad Yesterday written and sung by Paul McCartney. Today, I think a song far lovelier and more upbeat is one that came out about the same time though the leading lyrics were written many years before:
