Born in the Mid 1900(s)

Today is the Ides of March, a bad day for Julius Caesar, but a very good day twenty-one years ago when the East Lake Junior High School Ninth Grade Class of 1965 met in East Lake Park for our fortieth reunion.

Yesterday, one of my lovely classmates posted a picture of our class from way back then, sixty-one years ago now. The picture is grainy and with low resolution so beyond the lower level of the bleachers it becomes increasingly hard to make out the faces. Marcella Jackson-Westmoreland was one of the popular girls and she tried to name the faces of most of the In-Crowd. If you look close you can see their names written under their faces.

I found myself on one of the higher rows. My face is not that clear, But I recognized my bangs. I recognized many of the faces in the photo. I have attached a link to the Beatles, already world famous in 1965, singing In My Life: “There are faces I remember all my life. Some have gone on and some remain.”

We were happy that so many classmates were able to make it our reunion and even our former principal and several of our teachers came. My favorite teacher Don Crane who taught art class and drama was there and I had the privilege of serving him in the food line.

Mr. Crane has passed and with him, our principal, the teachers and many more of our classmates. Most everyone in my class was born in 1950. We may had a couple of classmates who were born in 1949 and held over a year in primary school and my near neighbor Ric (Butch) Chambers was born in January of 1951. Those of us who have survived are three quarters of a century old. Another class mate, Bobby Wilson, commented of Facebook, that actually we have just turned twenty-five three times. That is an encouraging thought. Thanks Bobby.

“These faces I remember…In my life I’ve loved them all.”
