Peace
For eleven years I have been trying to find encouraging words to share. There are certainly enough discouraging comments out there. I marvel at how often our puppet masters would have us believe lies about our brothers and attempt to divide us in order to have greater power over us. Jedi master Yoda says that hate leads to the dark side.
Peddlers of hate appeal to the very worst in us and would have us believe the worst about our brothers. The word Satan’s literal meaning is “accuser of the brethren.” I do not believe that Satan is the Lucifer described in the Old Testament as “the morning star” nor to I buy into the myth of a war in heaven with a host of angels fighting to overthrow God lead by his beautiful and beloved angel Morning Star (Lucifer.) This story is not in the 66 books called the Bible, but in an epic poem by English poet John Milton called Paradise Lost. In the poem the rebellious angels with their leader are cast down out of heaven into hell and Milton puts these words in Lucifer’s mouth as he raises his fist to Heaven and declares, “I would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven!”
The darkness and shadow that dwells within all of us I like to call ego. This, I believe is the true Satan, the accuser of the brethren, the only true pretender to the highest throne and the one and only enemy of all that is good. The preachers, the politicians, and the lawyers would have us believe that our brothers are our enemies, adversaries, and that unchecked they have but one desire, to destroy us. Ego is our enemy and he/she is a liar and father/mother of all lies.
In the New Testament we are told, “And you shall know the true and the truth shall set you free.” I wrote yesterday that there are two voices in our heads – the still small voice of love and truth and the loud lying voice of hate and deception. We get to decide which voice we listen to and believe. The more we listen to the one the less we will hear the other.
Listening to, dwelling upon, and believing lies will drive us insane and cause us to commit horrendous and hurtful acts. Ego would have us believe some people are evil when the truth is that we are all of us capable of terrible acts of cruelty and inhumanity and of trying to justify them with nice sounding words like duty, patriotism, and the end justifies the means, when our true motive are not even self-interest, but ego’s diabolical interest.

What is the encouraging word in all this you ask. It is this: “Light dispels darkness, love casts out fear, and the truth will always win out in the end.” If you find yourself shaking your fist in anger and saying hateful things remember whose voice you are listening to and echoing. Quiet your spirit till you can hear the still small voice that always says, “Peace, be still” to every storm.
