Life Is a Balance of Opposites

Opposites attract and likes repel. That is a simple lesson that we learned as children playing with magnets and later after puberty confirmed in our sexual relationships. The tough seeks out the tender, the hard seeks out the soft, the coolness seeks out the warmth. Opposites though mysterious and sometimes infuriating are nevertheless wonderful, compelling, and complimentary.

We are drawn irresistibly to our polar opposites and it is in this passionate dance that we find true balance within ourselves. We all, men and women, gay and straight, all the colors of the rainbow, all religions or none, and all the letters of the alphabet including the L, B, T, Q along with A, B, C and X, Y, Z have two sides to our brains though we may favor one over the other like handness, left or right. We have the capacity to learn to think out of both sides of our brains the same way we can use both of our hands. Those who have lost the use of there predominant hand can learn to do all the things they formerly did with their remaining hand, with practice we could perhaps all become ambidextrous.

Two verses from the Bible come to mind: “Male and female created he them.” And “In Christ there is no longer male nor female for we are one.” In the war between the sexes we should call a truce for as one of my favorite rock anthems says, “There ain’t no good guys, there ain’t no bad guys. There’s only you and me. And we just disagree.”

The irresistible force that draws us together is magnetism. Instead of fighting it we should as an old gospel song says, lay down our sword and shield down by the river side and sing. “I ain’t gonna study war no more. I ain’t gonna study war no more. I ain’t gonna study war no more. I ain’t gonna study war no more. I ain’t gonna study war no more. I ain’t gonna study war no more.”

Let us cease all hostilities. Let us not just pray the Lord’s Prayer, but answer it as well, “Thy will be done, thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”
