Strange Bedfellows 

Arguable the man most responsible for the Christian faith was not Jesus of Nazareth, but the Apostle Paul. His missionary journeys across the Roman Empire establishing churches and writing letters to sustain them took a religious movement from the back waters to the seat of the Empire in Rome.

Like the Christian Evangelicals of the last fifty years the early Christian church has allowed itself to be co-opted by government and used not to set people free but, to make them captives and puppets, strange bedfellows indeed.

The wise founders of this country knew that when religion and government get too cozy both are corrupted not just the government but, religion as well. In nineteen eighty the Christian Evangelical Movement merged with right wing conservative Republicans to elect Ronald Reagan President. Regan was at best a nominal Christian and at worst a puppet for the rich elite and corporations Together they formed a political movement that brought us to where we are today with our democratic political institutions in tatters and the Evangelical Christian Churches being rejected by younger generations as irrelevant full of hypocrisy. 

I am reminded of a saying that was popular when I was a boy, “You cannot get wrong and get by no mater how hard you may try.” The liars, the conmen, the grifters, and the religious hypocrites are always found out. The day of reckoning has come. Many political and religious leaders are finding themselves opposed by their former followers.
