Only Hope
There are situations that seem hopeless like a terminal medical diagnosis be it cancer, failing heart or some other vital organ like the brain. But I like one of my boyhood hero, Captain James T. Kirk, do not believe in the no-win scenario. I recall a gospel song I learned that the chorus of goes: “We have a hope within our souls brighter than the perfect day.” The last days for many people are far from perfect days. They deal too often with physical and mental pain that would crush the hope out of anyone. I think having to watch a loved one suffer unable to ease their pain is perhaps even heavier load to bear.
I have long believed that religion is a for most people an attempt to make sense of things that just don’t make much sense as much as it is an attempt to connect to a higher power when we find ourselves powerless. Princess Leia in the 1977 Star Wars movie sends a desperate message through R2D2 in the form of a hologram appealing to the famed Jedi Master. The holographic image is of the Princess herself saying, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”
You do not have to be a Christian, a Free-Mason, or in a twelve-step program to believe in a higher power though that is a requirement of all three. If you have trouble believing in a higher power just think of it as your higher best self. Self-reliance is a powerful thing especially we discover that there is far more to us than meets the eye.
The Great Commandment is to love God (our higher power) with all our heart soul mind and strength and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. God is One and the true trinity is God, Neighbor, and Self. You cannot love one without loving the other two. Love is our only hope.
