Peace, Peace, Wonderful Peace
Still your mind and your heart and imagine a world of peace. “Peace on earth, good will to men” is purportedly what that angels sang to the shepherds announcing the birth of the baby Jesus. “Peace, be still” are the words an awakened Jesus spoke to calm the storm that was frightening his shipmates. And, “Let not your hearts be troubled” were the words he spoke to his disciples after revealing that he was about to be taken by the authorities and crucified. “Rest In Peace, R.I.P. was once a popular saying carved on grave stones.
Sadly many believe that there is no lasting peace to be had in this world. In the words of a rock song, “In this world you cannot change” or in other words attributed to even Jesus that there will always be “wars and rumors of wars.”
On an encouraging note, I choose to believe that we change the world every time we change our minds and that we can be the peace we want to see in the world. My Uncle Joe was a long time CPA, Certified Public Accountant, and he told me when I was a young man that the root cause of all wars was economic. Profiteers always get rich and richer during wartime. My war, the Vietnam War, created more millionaires in the United States than there had ever been. Wars also distract us from other things that should be occupying our attention.
Peace, peace, wonderful peace, we must keep our eyes, hearts and minds on the prize and not allow politicians in trouble fearing the loss of their grip on profits and power and the military industrial complex that sees war as a great business opportunity to goad us into another senseless war.
