What Dreams May Come

I have written several blogs about the 1998 film What Dreams May Come. I almost included another reference to it in yesterday’s blog, but decided to keep the piece short instead. Much has been written and said about dreams, a prophecy from Joel also quoted in Acts says, “In the last days your young men shall see visions and your old men dream dreams.” I have heard more than a few people interpret that visions and dreams verse differently. Words often rather than making things clear have an opposite effect.

The dictionary definitions of the words dream and vision show how imprecise language often is.

Some envision a a future bright and blessed full of sweet dreams. Still others are plagued by a dystopian vision of the future full of nightmares. I believe our visions and our dreams are what we choose, that thoughts do indeed become things and that it is up to us to choose the good ones.

I recall hearing a preacher say not just once, but many times, that bad thought are like birds, we cannot prevent them from flying over head, yet we can prevent them from building a nest in our hair. Visions and dreams like those birds are inevitable, yet we get to choose the ones that take up residence in our hearts and in our heads.

Our own choices determine whether we view this life and the life to come as a technicolor painting, a beautiful dream come true or a black and white horror film where our worst nightmares seems to be our present and future reality.
