The Happiness Girl In The Whole U.S.A.

“I want a girl just like the girl that married dear ole dad” the song goes and my lovely and loving wife more than any other girl in the whole U.S.A. is that girl. I heard my mom say that the happiest times in her life was when she was pregnant. Though Linda Lee and I had met briefly in college when we were both twenty-two, we did not really get to know one till elven years later in life.

Linda was the happiest I have ever known her when she was carrying our son. She was so happy getting be a mom. It was a dream that after breast cancer in her mid-thirties doctors told her she would probably never get to experience. Today’s picture was in a Houston Chronicle article that said Linda was a cancer survivor and that her dream once dashed of getting to be a mom had come true after all.

During Linda’s pregnancy with our son Jonathan (Jay) she had gestational diabetes and had to prick her finger three times a day to check her blood sugar, yet she did it smiling she was so happy to be pregnant. After Jonathan was three Linda wanted another baby so I got a vasectomy reversal and she was soon happily pregnant again. Sadly, we lost that baby. After a period of mourning she wanted to try again. So I got another vasectomy reversal, for the window was only open for a couple of months as the scar tissue from the surgery closed off the openings in the vase tubes. This time Linda did not get pregnant right away so her doctor recommended hormone injections. I never thought I could give a shot, but gave her one every evening till she  was soon smiling and pregnant for the third time. Alas, that child also she did not make it to full term. Our hearts were again broken.

I have often wished that Linda and I had gotten together sooner so she could have spent more of her life happily pregnant. Jay would have had a house full of siblings to grow up with and I a much happier wife. The old adage is, “Happy wife, happy life.”

What with breast cancer twice and two miscarriages Linda has had a lot of tragedy in her life and is now dealing with yet another tragic circumstance. I believe that women get to choose whether they want to get pregnant and to be moms or not. Men used to joke about keeping their wives barefoot and pregnant. That joke was probably never as funny as some thought it was. However the two most important women in my life both found pregnancy and motherhood the happiest times in their lives.

And I too am happy that I got to be the beloved son of one and the adoring husband of the other. Both of those wonderful mothers at one time or another called me “Baby.”
