“How To Open Doors With Just A Smile”

The Eagles hit song Lyin Eyes released in 1975 has the classic lines:

It is a lesson that we all can learn, for a smile really can open doors as many a smooth sales person, preacher, politician, and con-man can testify. Yet, it is also true that the eyes are the windows to the soul and even the biggest, warmest, brightest smile cannot hide a pair of lying eyes:

If we are deceived we are just not paying attention or our yes are so captivated by that smile and points south that we fail to see the lie in the eyes that can never be completely hidden.

A smile is indeed a thin disguise if disingenuous. There is a scripture that says something to the effect that the truth is established by the testimony of two witnesses. A smile is but one witness. If you are looking for confirmation, the eyes have it.

If the look of love is missing from those eyes you can be sure that the smile is fake, false, and most likely that “vision of loveliness” is but a crafted illusion.

Listen to that chorus again.

David James White
