Winter Storm Event

Winter storm events in the part of the world where I have spent the most time during this particular adventure in time and space, Houston, Texas, are usually characterized by a lot more rain, than ice or snow. The local weather forecasters always get excited about freezing weather as it promises a chance of more than a few snow flurries. As I am neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, I trust a hanging rock that I saw once in Wisconsin to make the most accurate weather forecast.

The large rock had a sign by it that read: “Weather Predicting Rock – If the rock is wet it’s raining, if the rock is covered with snow it’s snowing, if the rock is hot it is sunny and warm … etc.” Though not quite as riveting as the weather forecast delivered by the shapely weather girl perhaps, it is far more accurate.

They say it is a sign one is getting old if they are preoccupied with the weather. Talking about the weather is a cliche for running out of interesting conversation. Dramatic and fearful forecasters keep us watching through the commercial breaks. Like politicians weather-forecasters would have us fear changes in the weather. A potential big storm sells more snacks than the Super Bowl.

Relax, folks, it’s just a little weather. Remember when we were children how fascinating it was to see a good rain storm, snow storm, or even ice storm? The nay-sayers and fear-mongers are mostly just trying to sell stuff. That big rock may get wet, cold or icy but the sun will come out and warm things up again sure enough.
