Walking In A Winter Wonderland

Yesterday, I shared that the first house that I recall living in as a boy was a small brick duplex with an ancient toilet on the back porch that both duplexes shared. Each duplex consisted of three rooms, a front room, a middle room, and a kitchen with a back door to the back porch. After we were living there a few months the family in the other duplex moved out and my dad arranged to rent both sides and he opened up a sealed door in the middle room and joint the two sides of the duplex into one house.

We did not need two kitchen so we used the one for storage. One of my mother’s brothers had recently divorced his wife and he had asked if he could store his half of the furniture that he had gotten in the divorce settlement till he could afford  a place of his own again in which to use it. He was living in his parent’s home again temporarily. My folks agreed to store his stuff, but to save on the heating bill they closed off that room, forgetting that the water pipes in the kitchen needed heat to keep from freezing.

After a particularly cold winter night the pipes in that closed off kitchen did freeze and burst and we awoke the next morning to a winter wonderland in our extra kitchen/storage room with ice cycles hanging all over my uncle’s stored furniture. It was a sight to behold. As I recall it was in January after Christmas, but it seemed to my brother and I like a belated Christmas gift. My parents and my uncle thought that it was a big mess, but two little boy thought of the song, Walking In A Winter Wonderland.
