“Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself”

Those words were said by arguably one the greatest American Presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, at a very dark time in this country during the Great Depression. There are a lot of people very depressed regarding the fate of our country at this time, people who are afraid.

I am reminded of a New Testament verse that says:

As an aside, first let me say that most Bible scholars do not believe Second Timothy was written by Paul any more than they believe that the Gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. The names were attached to lend authority to the books, books I might add that were picked by a church council that decided which books were to be considered holy scripture. The whole process seemed more political than divine. As today’s song says, I believe, “There’s a blazing light in every word. It doesn’t matter which you heard the broken or the holy hallelujah”.

Furthermore, whoever wrote the Second Timothy quote, it rings true to me that my higher power, my highest and best self, has not given me a spirit of timidity or fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. The true opposite of love is not hate but it’s underlying cause, fear. Wise Yoda, the Jedi master teacher, says that to his student, Luke Skywalker, in an inspired passage from the mind of George Lucas:

Instead of being fearful and hateful of those we suppose will destroy America in the name of making it “great again” which was always just a dog whistle for “white again”, we should trust our higher best self, who is color and gender blind by the way, to insure that all things work together for our good and that we have nothing to fear, but fear itself.

Listen carefully and you can hear your higher best self whispering in even the darkest times, “Fear not, for I am with you.” Hallelujah to that and Amen!
