Lessons Learned
Staring at a clear blank screen
And wondering what to write
Looking, longing for inspiration
After a long and sleepless night.
My muse has yet to fail me
With what to write or say
Exactly fifty-six years ago
Was my first wedding day.
Four days later I was off to war
So young with so much to learn
A marriage barely even begun
Would be over before my return.
A painful lesson that indeed
Any time we risk we can lose
Whatever choices we may make
Other people get to choose.
Unhappy with our choices
We are free to choose again
Listening to our better voices
Can spare us repeated pain.
