What Do You Want Most?
There is a line in the New Testament that reads, “Every good and perfect gift comes down from the father of lights.” Some would have us believe that only applies to the teacher’s pets, the chosen ones, the cream of the crop, but there is no such caveat for elsewhere it reads plainly that, “He causes his sun to shine, and rain to fall upon the just and the unjust”, everyone, and has no favorites.
Our problem is that we so often fail to recognize just Who and Whose we are and therefore do not claim our inheritance. In this season of gift-giving and gift-receiving we often ask and are asked, “What do you want for Christmas?” If you could have what you want most of all, what would it be?
On the latest Paramount Landman episode grandpa played by Sam Elliot has come to live with his son, ex-wife, daughter and two long time friends and oilfield employees of his Landman son who is played by Billy Bob Thornton. Billy Bob warns his dad that dinners in that house are quite the adventure so just roll with it. Like Forest Gump’s mother’s life lesson, “You never know what you are going to get.”
The wife who loves old people wants to make grandpa’s first dinner in his new home special so she asks him if he was on death row about to eat his final meal what would he want. She clarifies the reason for phrasing the question that way, saying she did not want a bunch of food preferences to coming to mind just the one that would stand out if this were his last meal. She wanted him to focus upon what he would want most of all. And so grandpa shared the best meal that he ever had at a seafood restaurant in Louisiana while working on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. So the theme of evening meal be “Pirates” – You’re either a pirate or not a pirate, Arrr.
What do you want? One more Bible quote and this one from the Old Testament, the opening line of the Twenty-third Psalm: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Which means that he will provide everything as the good shepherd does for his sheep.
“I am so glad and grateful that everything that I could ever want or need is already mine and coming to me at just the right time and in just the right way from my loving and infinite source.” And this as true for you, and everyone, as it is for me, when we discover Who and Whose we truly are.
