The Beast In Me

Yesterday, I invested several hours streaming the recently released Netflix mini series starring Clare Danes and Matthew Rhys, The Beast In Me. It is the story of a writer suffering from writer’s block that stems like so many blockages in life from a false narrative. The lie that our enemies deserve to suffer as we have and that only revenge can settle the score.

Karma or God some religions teach, is the only one equipped to settle scores. “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

I prefer that ole time religion that makes me love everybody, even myself, too much to think that getting even is something any sane person really wants. I do not want justice. I want grace. I do not want revenge. I want mercy and forgiveness for myself and for my brothers. The term others is more aptly expressed as brothers for our only true enemy lies within.

If we are honest when we look in the mirror we see beauty and the beast within us. Which will ultimately prevail is a choice that we alone must make. Keeping score, making a list of wrongs, is a sure way to get hung up, to create a blockage that will stop the flow of love and creativity and set us on a path where we are all consumed with nothing more than trying to settle the score.

“The saying, ‘The one you feed,’ comes from a Native American parable about two wolves inside us, one representing good (love, kindness, peace) and the other evil (anger, greed, fear) – where the winning wolf is the one we give our energy and attention to, shaping our character and life experiences. By consciously choosing to nurture positive thoughts and actions, we strengthen the good wolf, leading to more joy and purpose, even while acknowledging the bad wolf exists.”

The wolf or beast that wins is the one we feed.

If you can stand looking at the ugliness inside give The Beast In Me a look.
