No More Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back

Having myself been a Conservative Republican for twenty-five years and after that a Progressive Democrat for about the same I have watched the pendulum swing back and forth with each party using their time in power to undo the efforts of the other and in so doing losing countless opportunities to find consensus and compromise that might have achieved real progress for the people that they claim to be elected to represent.

Today and for quite some time the political map has been about the red states versus the blue states. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have a clear majority and so national elections and many local elections as well are decided by Independent unaffiliated voters who are usually in the middle requiring candidates to start their campaigns throwing read meat to their base and then after winning their party primary nomination turn toward the middle before Election Day to get the Independent votes needed to win. Sadly despite their promises to both groups, their party and Independents, their allegiance is most often to neither, but to self-interest, political survival, and to the corporate lobbyists who write bills they are expected to support and get made into law.

For sometime we have had such an equally divided and contentious government that the few laws passed have being mostly disastrous for the people only benefitting the corporate interests which is another was of saying the rich and powerful few.

I believe both parties have failed the American people. We yet again have a very unpopular President deciding the fate of the nation by Executive orders not law, reversing those of his predecessor and whose narrowly controlled Congress has only produced one disastrous Bill called the Big Beautiful Bill that keeps in place tax cuts for the rich and in order to do so drastically cuts everything else except the military budget and that is more about placating the military industrial complex that supporting our Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force personnel.

The Democrats are expected to win big in the 2026 mid-term elections and are even hoping to take control of the White House and both Houses of Congress. Doing so they plan to reverse this  Administration’s Executive orders, pass laws to undo tax cuts to the rich, and even nominate and get approved a few Supreme Court Justices to balance out the courts again.

My dad never voted for a Presidential candidate that was a Republican or Democrat. I used to think he wasted his vote. He always voted because he said people who did not vote forfeited their “griping rights.” I have often shared my intention to live long enough to write ten thousand blogs. I figure at one a day that will take about another twenty five years. Instead of spending that time griping about the Republicans or the Democrats I intend to double my pleasure and Vote for Independent candidates so I can grip about both. Who knows maybe a major third major party could emerge and make things better. Political business as usual certainly isn’t getting the job done, in my opinion. I, for one am tired of feeling forced to vote for the lesser of two evils and figure it is high time that I cast my vote to help a better choice arise.
