“More To See Than Can Ever Be Seen..,”
“…More to do than can ever be done.” I am reminded of those words from the song from The Lion King, Circle of Life, often. My dad stayed busy trying to earn enough money to keep his wife and two sons fed and clothed. Dad had a friend whose father was very rich by Chattanooga standards in the early nineteen sixties. Someone posted today’s picture on Facebook of a creek in Soddy Daisy just north of Chattanooga. It reminded me of my dad’s friend’s rich father who owned a large piece of property there that had been strip minded. It was mostly upturned clay. The rich man employed my father, first buying up oil leases in Tennessee, North Georgia, and Northern Alabama, then as a sort of caretaker for his property and then for a few months as a manager of a liquor store that he and his son owned jointly in downtown Chattanooga. My dad really hoped that this rich man would be his ticket to some financial success of his own. That so rarely happens, for rich men are primarily interested in securing and growing their own wealth not in making other people rich and prosperous.
But I digress, for the point of this piece is not to point out the shortcomings of the rich or others, but to point to the true riches of all there is to see and do in this wonderful time and space construct where dreams really do come true and not just for the rich and powerful, but for everyone who allows their heart and mind to dream.
I often quote my friend Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe, who says, “Thoughts become things. Choose the good one.” With so much to see and to do often our most difficult task is to decide what we want to see and to do next. Many older people like myself have what they call a bucket list where they have a few things listed that they would like to accomplish before they “Kick the Bucket.”
My “To See and To Do List” is ever growing and there is no kicking any bucket on it yet.” Even if I get my one hundred plus years I am sure that I will not get around to all the things on my ever expanding list. Yet, I intend to stay busy like my dad seeing and doing all I can for the duration. Life is meant to be more than work. It is meant to be fun and it is meant to be good. Like famed comedian and actor Jackie Gleason used to say, “How Sweet It Is!”
