Something To Look Forward To
It is a pitfall of aging to think our best days are behind us. We oldsters have a tendency to dwell too much in the past and to color our memories with nostalgia for bygone days. There is a line in the Proverbs that says that thinking the past as “the good old days” is a silly thought. It is indeed for our eyes were placed in the front of our heads to help us to stay forward thinking.
A verse from the New Testament attributed to Paul comes to mind: “Forgetting that which is past, I press on to the high calling…” Or as sixties game show host, Monty Hall, put it more succinctly, “There are bigger deals ahead.”
No matter what age we have attaining, even if our birthday cake candles resemble a small forest fire we must trust the Universe, our loving and infinite source, to provide something for us to look forward to, some challenge, some adventure worth sticking around for. There are another couple more of those pesky dangling prepositions, yet I think you know what I am trying to say. The past is full of lessons learned, and today we are promised provision, more than the bear necessities, yet tomorrow is for hope of a better day than today. These are the good old days and in the words of the poet “Come grow old with me, the best is yet to be.”
