Saving Time
There is a line in one of my favorite movies, two actually, both versions of the movie Sabrina where the two lovely actresses who played Sabrina, Audrey Hepburn and Julia Ormand ask Linus Larrabee, played by Humphrey Bogart and Harrison Ford respectively, “What do you do with all that time you save?”
The same might be ask of all of us who avail ourselves of all the modern time-saving conveniences and shortcuts to “save time.” Can we, do we really ever save time or do we actually cheat ourselves and others out of the experiences of jobs well done and time well spent?
We have all, I think, experienced a bit of the boredom of having too much time on our hands. A line from my daily mantra comes to mind:
“Whatsoever my hands find to do this day, I shall do with my whole heart, finding purpose in even the most menial and repetitive of tasks.”
There is a great sense of satisfaction in a job well done. And a job well done like a phrase well written requires time, focus, and attention to the details. If we are at all paying attention it is not hard to find something that needs doing, something to not only occupy our time, but to give us that sense of satisfaction that adds so much to life.
I recall the story of a grandma teaching her grandson how to pick berries. She noticed him going from bush to bush, back and forth, trying to pick only the fattest juiciest berries. Her wise advice still rings true even after almost a hundred years since it was first given: “Put your bucket down where you are.”
Time, focus, and attention can accomplish great things even without time-saving conveniences or short cuts. “A job worth doing is worth doing well” the old saying goes, and doing anything right takes time like a great kiss.
