Daylight Savings Time
I have never much cared for Daylight Savings Time which has been widely used in the United Stated since Federal law enacted it in 1966. I was fifteen almost sixteen then and already pretty used to Standard Time. It has always seemed quite unnatural to me for the sun to still be up at 9 pm and even later in mid-summer. Yet having worked several week assignments in both Scotland and Alaska in mid-summer I experienced even longer daylight periods that only had a couple of hours of dusk and no darkness. We had to put thick dark curtains over the windows to sleep.
Our bodies have sleep patterns as do all animal and plant life. The time changing twice a year interrupts those sleep patterns and adds a lot of unneeded stress. There is overwhelming evidence that instead of all-year Daylight Savings Time, all-year Standard Time would be the healthier option.
Every year about this time I hope that when we turn the clocks back to Standard Time it will be the last time we have to mess with the clocks for good and for all.
Saving time or daylight is a rather silly notion. The sun will come up and set according to the seasons as it should. Those of you not old enough to remember how less stressful it was to always be on Standard Time would find it better too, I think.
Tonight when you lose that hour of sleep that you will supposedly get back next spring remember what ole Crazy Dave said about Daylight Savings Time. It was originally touted as a great energy savings initiative, but those savings were negligible and yet the stress and strain on our bodies is quantifiable.
Sweet dreams.
