The Secret
The secret to success, to making your dreams come true, to realizing your heart’s desire is not hard work, getting that big lucky break, or finding some get rich quick scheme that usually ends up short-changing everyone else, even you. The secret is simple really.
Yet, as a so-called quantum physicist wrote in a paper called Beyond The Secret, “First of all for the secret to work for you, you have to believe in a higher power.” At the time I was looking for more information about the secret, I was trying hard to be an atheist, having completely rejected the narrow fundamentalist teachings of my youth, young adulthood, and middle-age. Fortunately, the writer anticipated my problem and went on to say, “But, if believing in a higher power is difficult for you, try to think of your higher power as just your higher best self.” That solved my problem removing my impediment, to having the secret work for me.
In my search for something to believe in that was different from the beliefs that I had been taught as a child and had rejected because those beliefs were no longer serving me, I read two very large works, A Course In Miracles and The Way of Mastery. In my “Christian years” I had read the Bible though more than a few times from Genesis to The Book of the Revelation. I read the King James Version first at least five times through. Then several other newer translations a couple of times each. I even attended three years of Bible College majoring in Bible and Theology and tried my hand at being an Associate Pastor at a small church near my hometown in Tennessee. For anyone wishing to read the Bible through I found the easiest way is like the advice on how to eat an elephant – “One bite at a time.” Three chapters a day and you can complete all sixty-six books of the standard Christian Bible in a single year. I know for I used that method more than a few times. One of the reasons that I still quote the Bible a lot is because, having read it more than any other book, I know it quite well. I dare say I can hold my own with practically anyone wishing to debate scripture.
You can find a proof text for any religious belief in the Bible and so many Christian denominations and religious sects who claim to be Biblically based actually are true if you buy their particular interpretation of the verses in question. Even a document as short as the U.S. Constitution has lawyers, scholars and even Supreme Court Justices arguing over their interpretation of its relatively simple statements. Our Founding Fathers debated every line and the Federalist Papers were published in newspapers to help convince the larger states like New York to help reach the three quarters of the three quarter of the existing states threshold needed to ratifies the Constitution and its amendments.
The Course In Miracles and The Way Of Mastery like the Bible also make a perhaps dubious claim of Divine Inspiration. Be that as it may or may not be there are nuggets of gold scattered throughout all three which must be read mindfully to find. Someone has said of the Bible in particular that you have to spit a lot of dirt to get to the good stuff. Most people who argue that the Bible is divinely inspired have never read all of it and are unaware of its obvious errors and contradictions.
The conclusion of both A Course In Miracles, The Way Of Mastery, and even the Bible is that the quantum physicist’s work around for people like myself who had a problem with believing in a higher power because we had been disappointed by the family or tribal gods put forth as “the one true God” is that the true God, the Universal God, turns out to be yours and my higher self after all, the God who is all in all, the great “I Am.”
Jesus asked the boys once, “Who do men say that I am?” They answered, “Some say Elias or some other prophet.” But Jesus questioned them further, “But, who do you say that I am?” and Peter, the one who always spoke before he thought, replied. “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus later clarified who he was and who we are when he said, “Even as I am so are you in this world.”
Even the God of the burning bush in the Old Testament when pressed by Moses to reveal his name said, “Tell them “I am” has sent you.” The great secret to success, happiness, and having all your dreams come true is realizing Who and Whose you are. We have been mistakenly taught to believe that we are “less than” and told that people were struck dead for claiming to be God, why even the Jewish Council that tried Jesus decided to have the Roman’s kill him when they asked him if he was the Son of God and he answered with God’s given name, “I am.”
The secret, that is no secret is that you and I possess the power to make this dream, this adventure in time and space, whatever we will because of Who we are.
I have said on occasion to friends and loved ones, “You hung the moon and did a nice job.” To me that is no joke, but the God’s honest truth.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David James White
Note: If you read all of this long and wordy blog, The Bible, A Course In Miracles, and The Way Of Mastery should be no real challenge for you. They say people do not read today, but people who search for truth still do. “You shall know the truth , and the truth shall set you free.” Happy hunting!
