When October Goes
It is three days till Halloween and the end of October. Even though my birthday and my personal favorite of all the holidays, Thanksgiving, both come in the month of November I appreciate the sentiment expressed in the song by Barry Manilow. There is something especially melancholy about the passing of the month of October. Perhaps it is the first serious cold snap that comes at the end of October that signals winter is coming, but more likely it is the host of memories that come to the fore as Halloween marks the end of October and foreshadows the beginning of the Holiday Season.
Halloween is a wonderful time for children and adults where we get to “go wild” for a night, forget the diets, enjoy a sugar high, and a good scare as the creatures of the night come out to play. The conservative religious folk have long had a problem with Halloween and have tried unsuccessfully to prohibit and curtail its observation. But chalk up a win for the Pagans on this one.
The line from Barry’s song comes to mind, “I should be over it now I know, it doesn’t matter how old I grow, I hate to see October go!” Whether one sees life as a trick or treat, young or old, October and Halloween hold a special place in our wildly beating hearts.
