When You’ve Only Got 100 Years To Live

I looked on Facebook this morning for an idea to blog about and a dear and beloved friend had reposted something from one year ago, a lovely picture quote and the comment saying that boomers are in the last quarter of our lives so we should really make the most of the time we have left.

Some years ago Five For Fighting recorded a song called 100 Years in which the chorus goes: “There’s never a wish better than this, when you’ve only got 100 years to live.”

Unlike my friend, I no longer believe the old slogan that hung in many living rooms including ours when I was a boy, “Just one life “twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ shall last.” Two points: I believe that we have many lives to live and secondly that the story of Jesus Christ is a composite story produced by the Roman Emperors to consolidate their control over the peoples they had conquered. The secret of Rome’s long years at the top of the hill was that they added the new religions of the conquered peoples to their own. Emperor Constantine making Christianity the state religion was not so much a personal conversion as it was a great political move to consolidate his power over the peoples. Long before Vicar of Christ became the title of the Pope of Rome the Roman Emperor was worshipped as God on Earth – Vicar. Same song different verse.

It is high time we sung a different tune as we most likely have in previous lives and most probably will in lives to come. We boomers who have survived to probably the last quarter of this go round should follow my friend’s advice:

“Live your life, take chances. Be crazy. Because right now is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll ever be again.”

At least this go round.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
