Mysterious and Misunderstood

Thirty-three years ago a man, a relationship counselor with a Ph.D., published a book about understanding the opposite sex called Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. The ancients classified those two planets, our nearest neighbors in the solar system, as gods and called Mars the god of war and Venus the god of love. War and Love seem diametrically opposed and indeed both men and women refer to each other as the opposite sex because whatever the one wants the other seems to always, or most always, want the opposite.

Men and women think differently and even use different sides of their brains doing it. The right or rational or logical brain for men and the left brain intuitive or emotional for women. Both men and women have the other side of their brains as well, yet so rarely used them that their workings are a mystery and often misunderstood.

Doctor Gray makes some good points, but let me play Devil’s Advocate, a role that I was made for, and say that instead of trying so hard to understand each other that we should rather just enjoy the mysterious and misunderstood. I have often heard men say, “I know my wife” or women say, “I know my husband.” Do you really and if so how sad for you that there are no surprises left, no mysteries, no misunderstanding, no magic.

We would be better off not trusting altogether the “man-splaining” of men, especially men with Ph.D’s, on this subject, but rather seek the wisdom of a certain sorcerer of renown, Merlin himself, that the best way to handle a man or a woman is not to understand them, but to love them with all their mystery, misunderstanding, and magic. Just love them.
