After All
The song linked today is one of my wife’s and my favorites. It is featured in the movie Chances Are that has in its cast Cybil Shepherd, Robert Downy, Jr. Ryan O’Neil, and Mary Stuart Masterson. It is a 1989 classic film. If you have not seen it, it is definitely worth your while, in my opinion.
The line from the song After All by Cher and Peter Cetera that most appeals to my wife and I is : “Two angels who’ve been rescued from the fall.” To say that I no longer believe many of the things that I was taught as a child is not exactly correct. I love the English language and consider myself a wordsmith of sorts, but words are often imprecise. One of the reasons that I am such a wordy guy is that I use a lot of words hoping to make my meaning more clear, more precise.
It is not so much that I have rejected all of the things that I was taught as a child as it is that I have come to have a deeper and less parochial interpretation of many of them. One of the songs I learned as a boy that still has such a deeper fuller meaning to me now comes to me as I consider the line from After All:
“Love lifted me
Love lifted me
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me.”
In my humble opinion we are all angels who’ve been rescued from the fall – lifted by Love.
