On The Road Again

When I finally retired in December of 2021, I had hoped that my wife and I might spend our retirement years pulling an RV Camper around the country and discovering all the wonderful things to see that one never does unless they spend more than a few days in any new place. The famous quote from Scot poet Robert Burns goes, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”

Well, things did not work out exactly as I had planned, yet we have found a wonderful work around. Instead of getting to travel all around the country, for the last couple of months my wife has accompanied me on my weekly road trips to our property in Bon Wier, Texas. We usually head out on Tuesdays, spend the night in our twenty-foot RV Camper on Tuesday and Wednesday and head back to Houston Thursday afternoon.

Since last November when I bought the first fifteen acres to help our son Jay realize his Hundred Acre Wood dream I had been making the weekly drive mostly alone except for a few times that Jay was able to get away. One of my goals was to prepared a campsite on the property for a used RV Camper that I had purchased from a friend in Indiana.

All those mostly solitary weekly road trips were just for the day and as the drive there and back was six or so hours I had to leave before daylight to even have two or three hours to work as I did not want to be away from my wife any longer than necessary. I knew that having a trailer there with electric, water, and other working amenities would make the journey much more attractive to my wife and that together we could enjoy the trip there and back and even stay over enjoying the property and also exploring all the local sites using our personal campsite as a base from which to really discover East Texas and Western Louisiana.

One of Linda’s favorite songs and mine is from The Lion King and is called Circle of Life. One of our favorite lines from the song goes:

Linda and I have found that to be true and both look forward to our weekly road trips to see and experience a little bit more of this wonder planet, this great circle of life.
