Attention To Detail

When I was a young man I was very much in love with a woman, wise a beautiful, who once told me that she would know right away if my affection for her wained because I would cease doing the little things that were to her far more important testimony of my love than spoken or written words alone.

My beloved wife, also a both beautiful and wise woman, asked me to look up the phrase “Beyond words” yesterday and we had a discussion about how like The Book of James comment that “faith without works is dead” that so too love must go beyond words to be alive and that real love is an experience that cannot be expressed with words alone no matter how inspired or poetic.

Still we poets try and our best effort often receive the best praise, “I wish I’d said or wrote that.” I recall a love song from many years ago that describes what I am getting at:

Years before that song came out another song also shared the same theme : Little Things Mean A Lot. It is the little foxes that spoil the vine or our lack of attention to the details that allow the important things in our lives to crumble and fall into disrepair and ruin.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

Author’s Note: All relationships like friendships require time and attention to stay viable. Attention to detail says louder than words, “You matter to me.”
