The Path

It has been a long time since I thought of it, but when I was still a teenager, I first heard a getting to know you exercise where you have someone imagine with you for a while and then you try to help them to interpret their own imaginings and understand better the path that they have chosen.

It goes like this: Relax and let your mind wander. With your mind’s eye imagine that you see a path open up through a forest before you.

Describe the path.

Describe the trees.

You begin to take the path and as you are walking along, beside the path you see a key. Describe the key. Do you pick up the key?

You continue walking the path and see beside the path a cup. Describe the cup. Do you pick up the cup?

Continuing on there appears in the path a fearful sight. Describe it. What do you do?

After that scary part is over you are again walking on the path and a body of water crosses the path ahead of you. Describe it. What do you do?

Again on the path on the other side of the body of water you continue on for some time then come upon a high wall that crosses the path as far as you can see both ways. Describe the wall. What do you do?

Take a few moments before you finish this blog to write down your responses and descriptions of what you experience along The Path. Then apply these explanations of the symbols to interpret what you saw and experienced.

The path is your life’s way.

The trees are your friends.

The key is knowledge. Did you pick it up?

The cup is love. Did you pick it up?

The fearful sight is the great crisis in your life. How did you respond to it?

The water is sex? How did you do with that one? My dad took off all his clothes and jumped right in. I still smile when I think of that one.

The wall is death. I climbed the wall and for me the path continued on and on.

I hope you enjoy The Path and that you are enjoying yours.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
