What Makes You Happy?
We often get caught up in the impossible mission of trying to make someone else happy and fail to find happiness for ourselves. The psychiatrists say the reason behind this has to do with our having had as children one or more emotionally closed off parents whose approval we desperately sought, yet could not obtain. Therefore we continue this cycle of blaming ourselves for their unhappiness and trying over and over again to “reach the unreachable star.”
Happiness is not the “impossible dream,” yet trying to make someone else happy might be. We are not responsible for anyone else’s happiness but our own. We cannot choose for anyone, but ourselves. There are a couple of expressions that come to mind: “Follow your heart” and “What does your heart tell you?”
You deserve to be happy whether your parent or parents chose to be happy or not, whether your significant other chooses to be happy or not. Choose for yourself. You can choose for no other. Perhaps when they see how happy you are, they will decide to choose happy too. Whether they do or not, you owe it to yourself to do what makes you happy.
