The Last Day Of Summer

Folks in the far north country who experience longer winters and shorter summers may take greater notice of this day that we do in south east Texas where the temperatures, if they dip much at all, rarely do till after Christmas. Since I had what I refer to as my “long hot summer” in south Vietnam, January to December of 1970, I have looked forward to cooler weather much more than I do the heat.

For the last ten or so years of my working career I was on assignment in various parts of the country and even a couple of two month work assignments in the far north country. Though both assignments were in July and August the warmest time of year in both places it was what I call “sweater weather” and very pleasant. Aberdeen, Scotland and Kenai, Alaska are at about the same latitude and have the mildest and shortest summers.

Soon afterwards I started getting longer work assignments up north where I got to experience fall, summer, and spring with temps often dipping far below zero and with inches of snow that I never or rarely if ever saw in the Deep South.

I have often remarked that I must have been a Yankee boy in another life because I so love the cold wonderland of winter. Last January we got a dusting of snow and temps in the teens for a few days in both Houston and Bon Wier, Texas. It was wonderful. I am told that the meteorologists predict we will have a warm and dry winter in south east Texas this year due to the effects of an el Nina. But, hey they as often get it wrong as they get it right.

The Yankee boy in me is singing, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.” I would settle for a little rain right now for I love the rain as much as I do the snow. Most every places I have been, they have a saying about the weather that they think unique to their part of the country. It goes, “If you don’t like the weather just wait a minute and it will change.”

Many fear and loath change, I find it refreshing. Four seasons is a pretty fair and balanced arrangement.
