Star Light, Star Bright, First Start I See Tonight…

My wife of thirty-six years, Linda Lee, and I both love looking at the moon and the stars. I slept till first light this morning, but she hardly sleeps and was telling me of seeing a crescent moon in the eastern sky and two lights near it. She asked me what they were and so I, not really being a know-it-all, asked Google. today’s illustration was part of Google’s answer to our question, The Star Regulus and the planet Venus.

There is so much light pollution in the city of Houston, Texas, where we reside, that we do not see many stars even on a clear night, but we have been spending a couple of nights and parts of three days at our property in Bon Wier, Texas since the three day Labor Day weekend. Last month we parked a small camper trailer on our campsite in the East Texas Piney Woods. Though technically not located deep in the heart of Texas, but just three miles from the Louisiana state line on US Highway 190, the stars are still big and bright there.

In case you non-Texans missed the reference it comes from a beloved song that we Texans cherish:

I happen to be a poet myself and a long time fan of poems and songs that rhyme like nursery rhymes. They are like the moon and the stars have been the night lights in dark the sky throughout my life.

May all your best and brightest wishes come true.

Your friend, fellow traveler, and star gazer,

David James White
