“Be The Change You Wish To See…”
All change begins with us. Why, we foolishly believe that we can change someone else or even want to is beyond me. There is a haunting line from song in the soundtrack of the movie Forest Gump as Jenny is getting deeper and deeper into a life of drugs and despaired where the singer says, “Lord, knows I can’t change.” But the truth is that of course we can, that we have been changing all our lives, but mostly just allowing the world to press us into its mold. We can and should rather choose to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.
“Thoughts become things. Choose the good ones.” says my friend Mike Dooley. Instead of believing ego’s lie that we cannot change ourselves or the world we need only remember Who and Whose we are to realize that we are the authors of all we survey and have only to change our minds to change the world.
Some years ago some idealistic youths coined the phrase, “Free your mind and the rest will follow.” That rang true then and still does for me. I am determined not to become one of those grumpy old men who sees everything going to hell in a hand basket, but rather to be the change I wished to see in this world. How about you, Pilgrim?
