“Friends Are The Family We Choose”

A dear and long time friend asked me yesterday if I believed in miracles and if I believed that we get to pick and choose which miracles that we believe in. My reply was quick and unusually brief, for me: “Of course I believe that we get to pick and choose what we believe.” I also believe that we get to pick and choose our friends and that friends are the family we choose. I even go one step further. I actually believe that we get to live not just one life but as many lives as we choose and that somewhere, some place, between incarnations that we get to plan out the details of our next adventure right down to the cast of characters even picking who will play our family and friends in our next adventure in time and space.

This belief might seem strange to you but, it serves me well and it has become my practice with all beliefs to pick up new ones that serve me and to discard those that no longer do. Nothing to me seems quite so sad as holding on to beliefs that no longer serve us or failing to try new things or make new friends because of some misbegotten loyalty to old beliefs or old friends, especially those who have long passed.

I share again the secret to a long and happy life that I heard from a man in his second set of teens. He was a hundred and sixteen and said that he believed the secret to a long and happy life was to always be making new and younger friends so that you never outlived all of your family and friends. Now that is a belief that serves me well so I intend to hold on to it for a while.
