“Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie”
The Jesus of the New Testament is a character of many contradictions and for centuries many have found or tailor made the god of their choice from their preferred take on him. I have given quite a bit of thought over the years as to why we believe what we believe.
Some people believe that the Jesus of the New Testament and that even the God of the Old and New Testament are constructs created by Rome from many religious and superstitious traditions to control the people . It was the Roman Empire’s mode of operation to add the gods of the conquered people to its pantheon of official state sponsored religions. Christianity was just the biggest and best version of that practice. “If you can’t beat them – join them.” Literally!
I think it no coincidence, that Jesus’ life story and that of so many of the gods before him sound so familiar and similar. The only evidence of a historical Jesus are a bunch of bogus Church relics? Supposedly there are enough pieces of the cross scattered around Christendom that if reconstructed would make a tree larger than the tallest redwood. And why was the first move of the Church of Rome to persecute and quell all opposition to the Church Council’s version? Why, they even voted on which books of the myriad of books that were to be considered holy. To quote Batman’s young sidekick, “Holy crap, Batman.”
I believe that the God of the Bible and Jesus in particular was created in our own image and not the other way around. Why do we believe what we believe? Because somebody taught us too. But why? Crowd control, the Roman emperors were famous for creating circuses to distract and entertain the people. The Church of Rome and all the host of Christian denominations that stem from it are to me – just one big three ring circus, starring “the three men I admire most – the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Rumor has it that they took the last train for the coast.
