“It Was A Dark And Stormy Night”
Peanut character Snoopy, like myself is a writer born in the nineteen-fifties. Today’s picture is the cover of one of my favorite Snoopy stories. I do so love a good mystery and Snoopy has written a classic using lines from noir mystery movies.
Forest Gump’s mom is quoted in the book and movie as saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” Not to argue with such a sweet mom, but all true detectives know that if you follow the clues that you can solve even the most difficult of mysteries. As for chocolates, Whitman Samplers have removed all the mystery by putting a map inside the box lid.
Figuring out the mystery of life is a bit more difficult, yet the clues are all around us. Two of the most important clues in this Who-Done-It that we call life are found in two psychological terms projection and mirroring. We project upon others those traits in ourselves that we are unwilling to see or are otherwise unable to see. And like wise we and others are mirroring to each other, reflecting back to one another the most perfect picture of who we truly are.
One of the phrases in my daily mantra is there to remind me to pay attention to these two important clues. It goes: “I mirror you, I admire you, I worship you, I adore you, I love you.” That line applies to our higher Self and everyone for I believe we are all One, to love anyone is to love God, to love God is to love everyone, and before you can love anyone you must learn to love yourself.
The greatest danger of all the “guilt religions” is that they falsely teach us that we are fallen creatures, born in sin, with no hope outside ourselves. I believe on the other hand that what truly is inside each and every one of us is peace, love, and joy just waiting for the opportunity to show itself and to transform this dark world around us. When we are fed condemnation from birth the truth of Who and Whose we are is buried under false guilt for crimes that we never committed and missteps that are the natural process of growth. Thinking evil of others and ourselves has created this fallen world around us. This world is what we make it.
Yesterday, a comment from a friend on Facebook caused me to remember the lines from a favorite song from my youth:
“Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky.
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Ah Ha, you may say I’m a dreamer
But I am not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one.
Awake from the nightmare of a dark and stormy night and enjoy the sweet dream of this new day, this wonderful world.
