A Different Kind of Love Story

I borrow today’s title from a friend and fan’s comment on my short blog about Colin Raye’s song Love Me, yesterday. In response to her comment about it being a different kind of love story I shared that I believe that we all, like children, play dress up and pretend, wearing silly masks from time to time.

Why we mask our feelings and play this silly game of masquerade is beyond my understanding still I feel that it gets at the root cause of this so called Battle of the Sexes and of so much misery and disappointment in the world. Rhett Butler’s final lines to Scarlet in Gone With The Wind Come to mind. No not the famously shocking one, “Frankly, My Dear, I don’t give a damn.” (Really he gave too much of a damn about her from the start.) but, the remark that he made before that about their being “at cross purposes” misunderstanding each other’s motives, actions, and desires. Another Colin Raye’s love song Not That Different takes off our silly masks and reveals that men and women really want the same thing – SEX. Oh, he sings it more poetically of course, but behind all those pretty words our shared motivation is clear. The Urge to Merge is what has not only perpetuated the species, but I believe like the butterfly wings creating the hurricane, keeps this ole world spinning like a top.

Now friends and fans there is your Different Kind of Love Story. Remember at the end of the end of every masquerade ball everyone takes off their masks. Beneath that mask, you look marvelous.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David James White
