The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Education for most people begins with stories that are told to us or read to us when we are small children. The core of early education in elementary or primary school used to be called, “Reading, writing, and arithmetic.” Many today who think them highly educated with advanced degrees no longer read and even fewer write but the stories we tell ourselves, tell others and believe are who we think we really are.

I receive a column online called Super Age that has tips on how to live a longer and a happier life. A few lines from Founding Editor of Super Age, Heather, stood out to me as I read her piece this morning:

According to Heather we are all readers and writers of our own stories developing our own mythos as it were. After publishing over thirty-five hundred blogs I have a little experience with writing and rewriting, trying to get a story just right. Like being a doctor or a lawyer, writing is “a practice” something you work at hoping to get better at, but never think you will get perfect.

One of my favorite stories is that we are children of God who have chosen these adventures in time and space to experience all there is and that to get the most from these adventures we have chosen at the beginning of each new adventure to hide from ourselves the knowledge of Who and Whose we are so that we can experience the great joy of discovering our true identity again and again.

We find the clues to who we are in the stories we tell ourselves and choose to believe.
