More Than Sex But Not Less Than

The three subjects to avoid they say are Religion, Politics, and Sex, but this writer being one unafraid to go where angels dare not tread will venture there today. First let me dispel any false notions, if there be any, that I am an angel, a candidate for sainthood or that I even profess to be a Christian. I am not the first two, neither do I profess to be there third. I am, but a man, a heterosexual male, therefore I have a particular fondness for women. I mentioned a line from favorite song yesterday that says, “There was a girl..” Indeed for me there has always been a girl thus the appeal of another song from my youth, “Travelin’ Man” made popular by Rick Nelson.

Sometime after Rick released his song about having a girl in every port a free spirited young lady named Melanie recorded the female perspective. I have never thought it fair, equal or even sensible, the double standard that allows young men to “sow their wild oats praying for a crop failure while young women are expected to stay chaste and untouched being above such carnal inclinations. This attitude regarding Sex is as silly and stupid as are most if not all opinions regarding Religion and Politics to me.

Not talking about these taboo subjects does not make us any smarter, but only more ignorant and susceptible to being manipulated by those who would use Religion, Politics, and Sex individually or collectively to control us.

Over the years I have heard more than one woman say that she wanted a love relationship with a man that was more than sex. My sentiment on the subject is quite similar with the qualifier that I too always have wanted an intimate love relationship with a woman that was more than sex but not less than.

C.S. Lewis wrote once that trying to describe the Christian heaven to an average male in conversation might have the man asking if the greatest pleasure he has experienced in life, sex, goes on there and if told, “No” he might say, “It must not be much then.” In like manner if a child’s greatest pleasure is eating ice cream and you try to describe sex to him or her they might ask, “Do you eat ice cream while you are doing it?” If you answered, “No” they might also say, “It must not be much then.”

Reminds me of the little boy singing in the Oreo cookie commercial of my boyhood, “Girls are nice but gee what icing comes with Oreo.” Out there beyond the horizon, there’s more, there’s more..
