Beneath A Smiley Moon
On my drive from Houston to Bon Wier, Texas this morning in the dark sky above me I saw the comforting sliver of a smiley moon. I am not a fan of guilt religions preferring to think of my higher self as loving and compassionate not as vengeful and judgmental. Ever since as a boy I first saw Walt Disney’s animated Alice In Wonderland I have thought of that grinning Cheshire Cat in the tree that Alice saw along the way who disappeared leaving behind only a smile. Whenever I see a smiley moon I think of that cat and my loving and infinite source, my higher self.
Some have been taught to think of God as more like Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, ready with a sucker for his good girls and boys, but a terrible monster to those who misbehave. The majority of us have misbehaved, everyone in fact if you believe the New Testament report card that says, we have all gotten failing grades i.e. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” I much prefer the song Sheltered in the Arms of God to the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.
If you believe that you were born under an angry star or that your higher self is always angry, jealous, vengeful and disappointed in you, next time you see a smiley moon remember just Who and Whose you truly are – that you are lovable, loving, and altogether lovely for you are Love incarnate. You are the inspiration for that smile in the night sky.
Some see God as a terrible taskmaster and the moon as a harsh mistress. But I prefer to see the highest and best in myself and others basking and bathed in love beneath a smiley moon.
